In the February 2003 issue of the
Iron & Steelmaker magazine, both Joseph P. Hughes and Roger
D. Sims, P.E. were pictured and highlighted as recipients of the
Meritorious Award for Best Tank Car Technology for the 21st Century II -
Session I Paper.
This award was the result of the creation of the paper
"Steels for Tank Cars" which was presented at the 43rd
Mechanical Working and Steel Processing Conference and published in the
Conference Proceedings. The paper and the original work sponsored by
the RPI-AAR Tank Car Safety Research and Test Project have generated
important information on the performance of steels that are damaged in
railroad accidents. As the industry moves forward with new tank car
designs, such information is available to guide designers in their search
for improved performance.
