As president and CEO of Sims Professional Engineers, Roger Sims has led his team through steady growth, while maintaining a sharp hands-on approach for new railcar design, vehicle performance, and large-scale database management for the tank car industry. Prior to founding his own engineering firm in 1983, Sims gained extensive experience in freight car design, engineering, and construction through engineering and managerial positions he held at Pullman-Standard, Thrall Car Manufacturing Company, and TTX. He was instrumental in the development of several new railcar designs and improvements, including new hopper gondola, and boxcar designs – specifically Railgon, the Theta 80 Covered Hopper Car, a lightweight articulated intermodal flat car, and an intermodal well car. He holds numerous patents, including several involving car-less technologies.
Has served on transportation industry committees, Sims has been particularly involved in the area of mathematical modeling of vehicle performance, fatigue analysis, and as a strong proponent of the development of a high-speed rail system in the United States. Sims is president of the Indiana High Speed Rail Association, a non-profit group that has spearheaded the push for high-speed rail service in the state. Currently, he serves on the Society of Automotive Engineers Truck and Bus Fifth Wheel Committee and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Rail Transportation General Committee. Sims is also a longstanding member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Railway Engineering and Manufacturing Association.
